In 2019, the European Union approved new legislation concerning the use of single-use plastic that came into effect on 3 July 2021. It was adopted to address the unsustainable consumption and use of lightweight plastic carrier bags, which are among the top ten items of litter throughout Europe. Lightweight plastic carrier bags are often used only once, but they take centuries to fully degrade in the natural environment. While this is happening, they are often ingested by terrestrial or marine animals, or break up into microplastics. Either way, they end up in the human and animal food chain.

The Directive requires EU Member States to take measures, such as national reduction targets and/or economic instruments (e.g. fees and taxes) and marketing restrictions, provided that the latter are proportionate and non-discriminatory. The measures taken by EU Member States include either or both of the following:

  • The adoption of measures to ensure that the annual consumption level does not exceed 90 lightweight

plastic carrier bags per person by 31 December 2019 and 40 lightweight plastic carrier bags per person

by 31 December 2025, or an equivalent target set with regard to weight; and/or

  • The adoption of instruments to ensure that, by 31 December 2018, lightweight plastic carrier bags are not provided free of charge at the point of sale for goods or products, unless equally effective instruments are implemented. The Directive also requires EU Member States to ensure that consumers are informed about the availability of REUSABLE ALTERNATIVES and to encourage the use of such alternatives for SUSTAINABLE SHOPPING.

Therefore, back in 2017, BAGFACTORY started to explore innovations and develop a unique non-woven bag ECO-CENT that would be environmentally sustainable, socially responsible, would have ecological advantages and could replace single-used plastic and paper bags.

REDUCE

The Eco-Cent BAG is lighter than most single-use paper carrier bags and even traditional +50 micron plastic carrier bags.

How does the Eco-Cent bag fulfill the three pillars for ecologically-friendly packaging?

RECYCLE

Up to 95-100% of the bag is made from recycled material, ensuring savings on the raw materials. Also, since the bag is made out of just one mono-material, it can be easily recycled when it reaches the end of its life.

REUSE

Produced out of a soft fabric which is very pliable, the bag should be treated as a valuable item instead of a single-use item. Although the material is light, the bag has been tested to carry 15 kg of groceries time after time, and if it gets dirty you can easily launder it in a cold wash cycle.

Why to choose ECO-CENT?

Made in Europe

We develop innovations and produce environmentally sustainable, socially responsible ECO-CENT reusable bags at our factory in Vilnius, Lithuania.

lightweight material

In the production of our ECO-CENT bag, we use a lightweight (50 grams per square metre) material with unique properties, which is two times lighter than an ordinary paper bag with handles.

Up to 95-100% RECYCLED RAW MATERIALS

Even though the bag is light, we are able to produce it with 95-100% recycled materials, which does not significantly change the properties of the bag in comparison to virgin materials.

MADE FROM A MONO-MATERIAL

After multiple uses, the material of our non-woven bag can be 100% recycled, due to it being made from a mono-material.

100% reusable

The construction of our ECO-CENT bag allows the bag to be very durable, so it can be reused multiple times.

Reduced CO2 emission

Due to our production process in Europe, our ECO-CENT bag produces the least amount of CO2 emissions (a kg of CO2 per kg of fibre) compared to alternative reusable bags.

Eco-friendly water based inks

To produce our ECO-CENT bags with printing, we use eco-friendly water-based inks that meet the highest quality standards according to the EU legislation.

attractive price

Our machines for production are made in Europe, together with the lightweight durable material, which allows us to offer the ECO-CENT bag at a competitive price, even compared to PE or paper bags.

Large carrying weight

We guarantee up to a 15 kg holding weight, while ensuring that our customers can reuse the bag multiple times.

Machine washable

The bag is machine washable in cold water. The possibility for cleaning the bag increases the service life and results in a lower environmental impact.

Breathable fabric

The non-woven fabric is made by taking polymers and spinning them using heat and air. The resulting long fluffy threads are then pressed together between hot rollers, creating a flexible but solid fabric with a weave-like texture similar to that of canvas. The texture means the fabric is breathable, with a pleasant look and feel.

Food contact approved

Our ECO-CENT non-woven bag is certified to be used in contact with food, as a secondary packaging.

RENEWABLE ENERGY PRODUCTION

In our bag production process, we use environmentally-friendly electricity produced and certified from 100% renewable energy sources.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND GREEN PRODUCTION

Our production process meets the 4 main criteria for a circular economy and green production: cleaner production approach, use of niche technologies, reduction of the use of natural resources, and a minimised environmental and social impact.
